Delightful dessert squares filled with a rich, buttery filling and a flaky crust, inspired by classic Canadian butter tarts.
Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 4 tablespoons icing sugar
- 1 cup cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
- 1–2 tablespoons cold water (optional)
- 3/4 cup unsalted butter
- 3 cups brown sugar (lightly packed)
- 4 large eggs
- 1–2 tablespoons white vinegar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup raisins (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the pan by lining a 9×13 inch baking pan with parchment paper and spraying it lightly with cooking spray.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Make the crust by mixing flour and icing sugar, cutting in butter until crumbly, then pressing into the pan and baking for 10 minutes.
- Prepare the filling by melting butter, whisking in brown sugar, adding eggs one at a time, then stirring in vinegar and vanilla, plus raisins if desired.
- Combine crust and filling, spreading filling over the baked crust, and bake for 25-30 minutes until set.
- Cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for a few hours or overnight before cutting into squares.
Notes
Serve topped with icing sugar, with ice cream or whipped cream for an indulgent treat. Store in an airtight container for up to a week.
