Description
A delightful breakfast dish that combines the comforting flavors of cinnamon and apples with classic French toast, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 loaf of French bread (about 12–16 ounces), cut into 1-inch cubes
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and chopped
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- Powdered sugar, for dusting
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut the French bread into 1-inch cubes and place in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle melted butter over the bread and toss to coat.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
- Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces. Set aside.
- In a large baking dish, layer half of the buttered bread cubes, half of the chopped apples, and half of the custard mixture. Repeat with the remaining bread, apples, and custard.
- Mix brown sugar with a pinch of cinnamon and sprinkle over the top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and set.
- Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup.
Notes
- Use stale or dried-out bread for better absorption of the custard.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days.
- Consider adding nuts or dried fruits for extra texture and flavor.
