Description

A delightful breakfast dish that combines the comforting flavors of cinnamon and apples with classic French toast, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf of French bread (about 1216 ounces), cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 medium apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting
  • Maple syrup, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cut the French bread into 1-inch cubes and place in a large mixing bowl. Drizzle melted butter over the bread and toss to coat.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until well combined.
  3. Peel, core, and chop the apples into small pieces. Set aside.
  4. In a large baking dish, layer half of the buttered bread cubes, half of the chopped apples, and half of the custard mixture. Repeat with the remaining bread, apples, and custard.
  5. Mix brown sugar with a pinch of cinnamon and sprinkle over the top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown and set.
  6. Let cool for a few minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and drizzle with maple syrup.

Notes

  • Use stale or dried-out bread for better absorption of the custard.
  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to three days.
  • Consider adding nuts or dried fruits for extra texture and flavor.
